Setting Up An Indoor Exercise Area
Begin by choosing a place that is clear of all types of doggie household toxins. Use baby gates or portable exercise yards to block off an area within the home. A Dachshund works well with short bursts of exercise, so the area does not need to be large. According to the Dachshund Club of Victoria, these dogs love agility. In fact, they are most often used in trials, as show dogs, and in the field for hunting. Set up tunnels and small bridges for the dog to use within the designated exercise area. Include the dog's favourite toys, and create areas for the dog to discover hidden objects. For example, "bury" a treat under blankets, such as a homemade doggie biscuit. The pup will appreciate having to hunt for a reward, and will enjoy an indoor doggy workout.

Using the Area
While Dachshunds have wilful personalities, they are highly motivated by rewards. Use a healthy treat to introduce the area to the dog. Encourage him or her to interact with the equipment. Train the dog to run the course, and give frequent rewards. Moving through the course for a half hour each day will satisfy the dog's need for exercise, according to The Australian Dog Lover Magazine. Allow the dog to explore the area alone as well, especially if there is a treat hidden somewhere in the area. Again, this will encourage the dog's natural hunting tendencies and provide some mental stimulation.
